To Schiphol with a wheelchair: two situations
There are two main options for travellers with a wheelchair going to Schiphol:
1. Folding wheelchair in a standard taxi:
A folding wheelchair fits in the boot of a standard taxi or minibus. The driver helps with loading and unloading. You sit in a seat in the taxi yourself — the wheelchair goes in the boot. This is the most common situation.
2. Wheelchair-accessible van (adapted transport):
Are you unable to transfer from your wheelchair to a seat on your own? Then you need a wheelchair-accessible van — a vehicle you can board in your wheelchair via a tail lift. This is specialised care transport that falls outside what we offer; for this we refer you to a recognised care transport provider.
Good to know
Schiphol offers free assistance to travellers with a disability. Through the 'Hidden Disabilities Sunflower' (sunflower lanyard) or through the airline, you can request assistance with check-in, security and boarding.
Taking a folding wheelchair or mobility scooter in the taxi
Do you have a folding wheelchair, a rollator or a mobility scooter? Always discuss the dimensions and weight with us when you book. Our guidelines:
- Folding wheelchair (standard): fits in the boot of a taxi or minibus
- Electric wheelchair (folding, <20 kg): fits in the boot of a minibus if it is a compact model
- Mobility scooter: depends on the model — call us to discuss
- Rollator: always fits in the boot
When booking via our booking form, state the type of mobility aid and its dimensions. We will then find the most suitable vehicle.
Good to know
A standard folding wheelchair weighs 12–18 kg and fits in almost any boot. Electric folding wheelchairs weigh 20–30 kg and are large but compact — ideal for the minibus.
Requesting Schiphol assistance for your flight
Besides the taxi transport, it is important to request assistance from the airline as well. This is free of charge and includes:
- Escort from the departure hall to the check-in desk
- Priority check-in and boarding
- Wheelchair escort through security
- Help with baggage handling
How to request it:
1. Via your booking on the airline's website (PRM assistance = Persons with Reduced Mobility)
2. Via the Schiphol Assistance Service (free, 24/7)
3. Request it at least 48 hours in advance for the best service
Arriving at Schiphol with a wheelchair: practical information
Are you arriving at Schiphol after your flight and have you requested a wheelchair? Then this is how it works:
- A wheelchair will be waiting at the gate if you have requested assistance from the airline
- A Schiphol assistant escorts you from the gate to the exit
- Your AMS Taxi Schiphol driver picks you up upstairs at Departure Hall 2, exit F; if in doubt, call our dispatch on +31 85 400 5400
Mention when you book that you are using assistance — the driver will then allow extra time for getting in.
Seniors and older travellers: comfortable transport to Schiphol
For older people who do not use a wheelchair but find walking or longer distances on foot difficult, a taxi also offers considerably more comfort than public transport. Specific advantages:
- No stairs or walking distances
- Pick-up at your front door
- The driver helps with suitcases
- No stress with platforms, changes or crowded trains
Book easily online or by phone. We take the needs of your travel party into account.
