Heemskerk belongs to the IJmond region north of the North Sea Canal, a cluster of towns that shares one awkward characteristic for air travellers: every public transport route to Schiphol goes the long way round, either through Beverwijk and Haarlem or via Amsterdam. Even the fastest combination takes well over an hour, and the first services do not run early enough for a six o'clock departure.

By car it is about 45 kilometres and 40 to 55 minutes, using the A9 south towards Haarlem before turning east to the airport. The route is straightforward outside the morning peak; during it, the stretch between Beverwijk and Velsen carries heavy commuter traffic and we plan accordingly rather than hoping for a clear run.

The town is known for Assumburg Castle and its position on the edge of the dune reserve, and it draws a steady flow of visitors staying in the area rather than in Amsterdam. For those guests, a direct transfer removes the need to work out a Dutch transport network they will use exactly twice.
