IJmuiden is the port at the mouth of the North Sea Canal, and for British travellers in particular it is a familiar name: the DFDS overnight ferry from Newcastle docks here, as do a growing number of cruise ships at the Felison terminal. Many of our passengers on this route have just stepped off a ship and need to reach Schiphol for an onward flight.

The journey is about 40 kilometres and takes 35 to 55 minutes via the A9. From the ferry terminal the drive begins along the canal before turning south through Velsen and joining the motorway. We track ship arrivals in the same way we track flights, because a delayed docking otherwise turns into a missed departure.

The town itself has no direct rail link to the airport; the nearest station is in Beverwijk or Haarlem, both requiring a bus first. For anyone arriving by sea with luggage — or leaving on an early flight from a town where the first bus runs too late — a fixed-price car is the straightforward answer.
