Arriving at Schiphol: what can you expect?

You land at Schiphol after a long flight. What now? For many travellers the arrival process at Schiphol is familiar territory, but for others — or when you return from a far-flung destination — it can take some getting used to. We explain step by step what you can expect after landing.

Updated on

Step 1: From the plane to the arrivals hall

After landing, the aircraft taxis to the gate. You enter the terminal via an air bridge or by bus. Follow the signs for 'Arrivals' or 'Aankomst'. Schiphol has clear signage in Dutch and English.

Good to know

Schiphol has one central terminal with several piers (B to H and M). The arrivals hall is on the ground floor (Arrivals), directly accessible by escalator or lift from the piers.

Step 2: Passport control (for non-Schengen flights)

If you are arriving from outside the Schengen area (such as the US, Turkey or Thailand), you pass through passport control. EU citizens aged 14 and over can use the e-gate with their passport (not with an ID card). Non-EU travellers go to the staffed desk. The wait varies from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the time of day.

Step 3: Collecting your luggage

After passport control, you walk to the baggage belt. The screens show which belt belongs to your flight. Luggage usually appears within 20 to 30 minutes of landing. If your suitcase does not appear, report it straight away to the airline's baggage service — before you leave the baggage hall.

Good to know

Schiphol handles tens of thousands of suitcases every day. On peak days, such as Fridays and Sundays in the holidays, there are even more.

Step 4: Customs

After collecting your luggage, you pass through customs. Most travellers walk through the green channel (nothing to declare). If you have goods that need to be declared, use the red channel. Customs may carry out random checks.

Step 5: The arrivals hall and your driver

After customs you come out into the arrivals hall. This is where family and friends wait for travellers. If you book with AMS Taxi Schiphol, we pick you up upstairs at Departure Hall 2. You do not need to arrange anything yourself.

Your driver waits even if you are delayed

AMS Taxi Schiphol follows your flight live via the flight number. Is your flight delayed? Then the driver automatically adjusts their arrival time — free of charge. You do not need to call or send a message. The driver is there when you are.
