Schiphol in numbers: facts and figures about Amsterdam Airport

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the largest airports in Europe. But how big is Schiphol really? How many passengers, flights and destinations? And which airlines fly there? In this article we list the most interesting facts and figures about Schiphol.

Passengers and flights

Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in Europe: in 2024 the fourth, after London Heathrow, Istanbul and Paris Charles de Gaulle. In 2024 Schiphol handled 66.8 million passengers — an increase compared with 2023 (61.9 million), although this is still below the record year of 2019 (71.7 million before the coronavirus pandemic). In 2025, according to provisional CBS figures, it was 68.8 million.

On average, 1,300 flights land and take off at Schiphol every day. In the summer months this rises to more than 1,500 flights a day.

Destinations and airlines

From Schiphol you can fly direct to more than 300 destinations in over 90 countries. The airport is served by more than 100 airlines. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the home carrier and the largest user of the airport.

Popular direct destinations from Schiphol include:

  • London Heathrow, Paris CDG, Frankfurt (business)
  • Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Antalya (holidays)
  • New York JFK, Dubai, Singapore (intercontinental)

Good to know

KLM operates direct flights from Schiphol to more than 165 destinations worldwide. The airline was founded in 1919, making it one of the oldest airlines in the world.

Schiphol's terminal and piers

Schiphol has one terminal: the departure halls are upstairs, the arrivals halls on the ground floor by Schiphol Plaza. From the departure halls you walk to the piers:

  • Piers B and C: Schengen
  • Pier D: Schengen and non-Schengen, on two levels
  • Piers E, F and G: non-Schengen, including KLM's intercontinental flights
  • Piers H and M: mainly low-cost airlines; H is non-Schengen, M is Schengen

If you are flying to a destination outside Schengen, you go through passport control after security.

Good to know

Schiphol Plaza — the shopping centre connected to the airport — has more than 100 shops and restaurants and is accessible without a plane ticket.

Parking at Schiphol

Schiphol has its own car parks for every purpose: P1 right by the terminal, P3 Long-Term Parking with a free shuttle, P6 Valet and P12. P2 and P4 no longer exist. Rates (checked in October 2026) range from €2.70 per 20 minutes at P1 to around €95–€140 for a week at P3 booked online in advance; without a booking a week at P3 costs around €196.

For one or two days, P3 is cheaper than a taxi. For a week, a return taxi Haarlem–Schiphol at €110 costs about the same as P3 booked online, and is clearly cheaper than driving in without a booking, P1 or valet. Read more in Schiphol parking costs 2026.

A week at P3 costs around €95–€140 booked online in advance and around €196 without a booking. A return taxi from Haarlem costs a fixed €110, for the whole car and however long you are away.

Baggage and security

Schiphol handles tens of thousands of suitcases every day. Baggage handling is largely automated and runs through an extensive network of conveyor belts beneath the airport.

At security Schiphol uses CT scanners: laptops, tablets and your bag of liquids can stay in your luggage. The 100 ml rule still applies: liquids in containers of max. 100 ml, together in one transparent bag of max. 1 litre. In summer and during school holidays waiting times at security can be longer; the Schiphol app shows the expected waiting time.

Good to know

At Schiphol you can book a free security time slot from 3 days before departure. Useful on busy days, such as during school holidays.
