The rule of thumb: when should you be at Schiphol?
Schiphol and KLM advise being at Schiphol:
- Flights within Europe: 2 hours before departure (also outside Schengen, for example to Turkey)
- Intercontinental flights: 3 hours before departure
This includes checking in, dropping off your baggage and going through security. Always follow your own airline's advice, and do not arrive before check-in opens. On busy days you can book a free security time slot from 3 days before departure; the Schiphol app shows the expected waiting time.
Good to know
In 2024 Amsterdam Schiphol handled 66.8 million passengers, making it the busiest airport in the Netherlands and one of the busiest in Europe: in 2024 the fourth, after London Heathrow, Istanbul and Paris Charles de Gaulle. In 2025 it handled 68.8 million passengers (CBS, provisional figure).
Driving time from your home town to Schiphol
The driving time from your home to Schiphol depends heavily on where you live. Below is an overview for the most common starting points:
- Hoofddorp / Vijfhuizen: 15–25 minutes
- Haarlem / Heemstede: 25–35 minutes
- Beverwijk / IJmuiden: 40–50 minutes
- Zandvoort / Bloemendaal: 30–40 minutes
- Heemskerk / Wijk aan Zee: 45–55 minutes
Tip: always use the longest driving time as your estimate, not the shortest. Traffic jams, accidents and roadworks can lengthen the journey considerably.
So how early should you leave home?
If you combine the advice with the driving time, the following applies from Haarlem and the surrounding area:
- European flight at 09:00: leave home between 06:00 and 06:30
- Intercontinental flight at 10:00: leave home between 06:00 and 06:30
- European flight at 06:00 (early!): leave home between 03:00 and 03:30
If you live further away, for example in Beverwijk or Heemskerk, leave approx. 20 minutes earlier.
We know — those are early times. But better a relaxed cup of coffee in the departure hall than running for the gate.

Enter your departure time. We count back from the moment you need to be at Schiphol — half an hour more than Schiphol itself advises — with the driving time from your place and fifteen minutes to spare for the luggage.
A guide time, not a promise. If you give your flight number when you book, we check the pick-up time ourselves and track your flight live.
The advantages of a taxi over the train
The train to Schiphol sounds appealing, but it has drawbacks you can really feel with an early flight. Early in the morning only a few trains run from Haarlem and the surrounding area, and you often have to change. For an early flight the train is therefore awkward; check the NS journey planner. With a taxi, the driver is at your door at any time, even at 03:30.
With the train you also have to allow for walking to the station, waiting on the platform, travelling with luggage and getting off at Schiphol Plaza. With a taxi you travel from your front door straight to the right terminal, luggage and all.

Conclusion
For most travellers from the Haarlem and Beverwijk area: be at Schiphol 2 hours before a European flight and 3 hours before an intercontinental flight, and add the driving time to that. If you choose a taxi from AMS Taxi Schiphol, we match the pickup time to your flight — you do not have to work it out yourself. For a European flight we deliberately plan generously, so that you are at Schiphol approx. 2.5 hours before departure. That way you arrive at Schiphol relaxed and on time.
