Taking your pet on a plane via Schiphol: complete guide 2026

More and more travellers take their dog or cat with them on holiday. This is possible via Schiphol, but there are strict rules — per airline, per destination and per species. In this complete guide we set everything out so you leave well prepared.

Can I take my dog or cat on the plane?

Yes, in most cases you can — but the conditions vary greatly per airline. There are three ways to take a pet with you:

1. In the cabin (hand luggage): Only for small animals (a cat or small dog) in a suitable travel bag. Total weight including the bag is usually no more than 8 kg.

2. In the hold (as checked baggage): For larger dogs in an approved travel crate. The animal travels in a heated, pressurised baggage hold.

3. As cargo: For large dogs or flights where the animal cannot travel as baggage. Via a separate cargo programme of the airline.

Good to know

KLM has one of the most extensive pet programmes in Europe. With KLM you can take small pets in the cabin on flights within Europe — but you must register this in advance and there are limited places per flight.

Which documents does your pet need?

Within the EU an EU pet passport is required. This passport contains:

  • Microchip number (mandatory — implant before the vaccination!)
  • Proof of valid rabies vaccination
  • Identification details of the animal and the owner

The EU pet passport is only valid if the vaccination was given after the microchip was implanted.

Outside the EU (e.g. US, Turkey, Egypt):

In addition to the pet passport, extra documents are often needed:

  • Health certificate from a recognised vet
  • Proof of certain vaccinations (this differs per country)
  • Sometimes an official export certificate from the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority)

Apply for these at least 4–6 weeks in advance — many documents have to be approved by the NVWA.

Rules per airline

KLM:

  • Small animals (up to 8 kg including bag) in the cabin: €25–€50 per flight
  • Larger animals in the hold: prices vary greatly, registration required
  • Not all destinations outside Europe are available for animals in the hold

Transavia:

  • Small animals in the cabin allowed on selected flights
  • Registration required at the time of booking

Ryanair / EasyJet:

  • Pets are generally not allowed, except recognised guide dogs

TUI:

  • Pets are not allowed on charter flights

⚠️ Always check your airline's current pet page before you book.

Choosing a travel crate for your pet

If your pet travels in the hold, the travel crate must meet IATA standards (Live Animals Regulations). The crate must:

  • Be large enough for the animal to stand, turn around and lie down
  • Have ventilation openings on three sides
  • Have a water bowl (empty when boarding, attached to the door)
  • Have sturdy locks that cannot open accidentally
  • Carry a 'Live Animal' sticker

Recommendation: let your pet get used to the travel crate before the journey. Put familiar items in it (a blanket, toys) so the animal is less stressed.

Taxi to Schiphol with your pet

Travelling to Schiphol by train with a dog or cat and all the essentials (travel crate, food, documents) is awkward and stressful. With a taxi from AMS Taxi Schiphol it is much more comfortable:

  • Your pet travels with you in the taxi — mention this when you book
  • The travel crate fits in the boot of the standard car
  • For large travel crates or several animals, our minibus (up to 8 people) is ideal
  • We operate 24/7 from Haarlem, Beverwijk, IJmuiden and the surrounding area
