Cabin baggage: sizes and weight by airline

A small personal item can almost always come with you in the cabin, but for a larger cabin bag the rules differ by airline and by fare. Below are the most common sizes (length × width × height):

KLM:

  • 1 cabin bag: max. 55 × 35 × 25 cm
  • 1 personal item (backpack or bag): max. 40 × 30 × 15 cm
  • Max. 12 kg together
  • Economy Basic: personal item only, no cabin bag

Transavia:

  • Personal item: max. 40 × 30 × 20 cm
  • Cabin bag: 55 × 40 × 25 cm, max. 10 kg — only in the Smart and Max packages

easyJet:

  • 1 free under-seat bag: max. 45 × 36 × 20 cm, max. 15 kg
  • Large cabin bag (paid): 56 × 45 × 25 cm, max. 15 kg

Ryanair:

  • 1 free small bag: max. 40 × 30 × 20 cm
  • Priority (paid): trolley case 55 × 40 × 20 cm, max. 10 kg, plus the small bag

TUI fly:

  • Personal item: 40 × 30 × 20 cm
  • Cabin bag: 55 × 40 × 20 cm, max. 10 kg — included with package holidays; with flight-only tickets for departures from 1 May 2026, only the personal item

Rules differ by fare and change regularly; always check your airline's website (checked October 2026).

Good to know

Tip: always pack your cabin bag to just under the maximum weight and measure its dimensions at home. Airlines at Schiphol are increasingly strict about size and weight — at the gate you can easily pay approx. €60–€70 or more per bag, much more than adding baggage in advance.

Hold baggage: weight and surcharges

Hold baggage is the suitcase that goes in the hold of the aircraft. With most low-cost carriers it is not included in the cheapest ticket. Here is an overview:

KLM:

  • Economy Basic: no hold baggage included
  • Economy Standard and Flex: 1 × 23 kg included
  • Adding an extra suitcase: €45–€60 per item

Transavia:

  • Included in the Plus (20 kg) and Max (30 kg) packages
  • Other packages: add-on €25–€50, depending on when you book

easyJet:

  • Not included as standard — add-on: €12–€48

Ryanair:

  • Not included as standard — add-on: €11–€35 online, more expensive at check-in

TUI fly:

  • Often included with package holidays — check your booking

Tip: always book hold baggage online in advance — this is significantly cheaper than adding it at check-in or at the gate.

Special baggage: skis, pushchair, bicycle

Do you have unusual luggage? Below are the rules for the most common special items:

Pushchair:

  • Almost always free to take
  • Checked in, and returned to you at the gate or the baggage belt
  • A foldable buggy can often come into the cabin as cabin baggage

Skis and snowboard:

  • Charged as 'sports equipment'
  • Cost: €20–€60 per set depending on the airline
  • Ski set = skis + poles + boots in one bag

Bicycle:

  • Possible with most airlines as sports equipment
  • Cost: €40–€80 per bicycle
  • Pack the bicycle well (box or bag)

Pets:

  • Small pets (max. ± 8 kg including carrier): sometimes in the cabin
  • Larger animals: always in the hold — check the rules for your destination

Good to know

Checking in a pushchair is free with almost all airlines. Ask at the gate whether you can take the buggy up to the aircraft — this is possible on many flights.

Dangerous goods: what is not allowed in your suitcase?

In cabin baggage:

  • No liquids over 100 ml (all together in one transparent bag, max. 1 litre)
  • No knives or scissors with blades longer than 6 cm (measured from the pivot)
  • One small lighter or matches only on your person, not in your bag
  • No more than 2 power banks per person (since 27 March 2026); no charging on board

In hold baggage:

  • No loose lithium batteries
  • No power banks — these are only allowed in cabin baggage
  • No lighters or matches
  • No fireworks or explosives
  • Aerosols up to 500 ml permitted

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are also only allowed in the cabin — never in hold baggage, because of the fire risk. The e-liquid falls under the 100 ml rule.

Luggage and taxis: how much fits in a taxi?

Travelling to Schiphol with a lot of luggage? Tell us how many suitcases you are bringing when you book your taxi. As a rule of thumb for AMS Taxi Schiphol:

Car (1–4 people): room for 4–6 standard trolley suitcases

Minibus (5–8 people): room for 8–12 suitcases, large luggage compartment

Do you have skis, golf clubs or other special items? Mention this in your booking or call +31 85 400 5400. We will then find the most suitable vehicle.

Good to know

Tip: weigh your suitcases at home on a bathroom scale before you leave. Excess baggage at Schiphol can easily cost €10–€20 per extra kilo — checking beforehand saves a lot at check-in.
